    Fair warning to the Capital.
Just so that you know, Capital City, I'm after you. I'll be there today, no less! My flight leaves in about 2 hours. And I'll be around until Tuesday the Next! While my weekend is pretty tied up with going to some friends' wedding, this post constitutes me telling the rest of you it'd be good to see you if I haven't spoken to you already!

Comments are screened so that you can post your phone number and tell me to call you even though this is a public post because I'm not good at maintaining my friends list. :)

    Muffin's Winter Break: 2006 Edition
Dear readers based in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, New York City, Greenfield, and the surrounding areas: I'll be around! SFO is Dec 2 - Dec 11, PIT is Dec 11 - Dec 14 or so (then again, Dec 28 - Jan 2), NYC is December 15th through 23rd or so, Greenfield is Dec 23 - Dec 26. So, lemme know what's up!

Post a comment, send an email, leave a cellphone message, track down my travel plans, throw yourself in front of my car, say hi, say bye, punch me for your sister, whatever. We'll make something happen. Tell those other non-livejournal-reading folks, too.

Also note that I'll be running my psychology study on role-playing gamers in any of the above locales where I can find participants. So if you want to make $25 (and help SCIENCE), and know 4-6 people willing to participate who play in the same tabletop campaign and also know each other OOC, let me know and we'll organize!

And if you don't respond at all, leaving any meetings up to happenstance, I hereby absolve myself of any guilt due to not seeing you if I do not in fact see you.

(and you folks from more southerly locales, stay tuned for upcoming Spring Break in DC!)

Early Afternoon until we get sick of you. Or just sick.

Now, pay attention: The fourth of July party is on the third of July. The third. Three (3). Monday. Not Tuesday. Monday. If you show up on the Fourth, you will be laughed at.

People keep asking me if there’s a theme this year. And then when I tell them what I’m thinking, they argue with me. So, here’s the plan: Make your own theme. Do it yourself. If you think that it’s a Tiki theme well, then show up in a grass skirt. Is it a Christmas in July theme? Wear a Santa hat. End of the World? Strap on your shoulder pads made of tires and show up. You get the idea. There may be prizes for the theme that amuses us the most.

As usual, the amount spent for this party is reaching epic proportions. Because of this, we will be asking for cash donations from each person to help cover costs, repair damage, bribe the police, and pay for hookers. We will very much appreciate the donation of food and drinks in addition to cash, but ask me how much we spent last year, and you’ll understand. WE don’t like to set prices or charge admission, so give what you’re comfortable giving.

And that's it, we hope to see you there, any questions you may have can be answered below. Any other questions can be directed to Erik at ecaponi@gmail.org or John Eric at hoffmann@digitalfreaks.org

Since I know a bunch of you don't check IM and I don't have your email addresses, this is just a PSA that I'll be going to DC for my spring break, March 24th-April 3rd. Post here if you want some attention! It's a month and a half off, but some people need that much planning time.

And remember: Just because you don't live in DC doesn't mean you can't drive there!

    Sometimes I do post intentionally.
On March 27th, I went into the Center for Neuroimaging to participate in one of Scott Frye's studies on tool use. It was an fMRI experiment, meaning they spent hours scanning my brain.

Then, I got all the brain imaging data on a CD, and made some videos using OsiriX, a DICOM-image viewer for the Mac.

This picture is a movie of what you'd see if you started looking, from above, at the base of my neck, and then the movie scrolls up through my head. The last frame is the very top of my head. In this movie, it's as if I'm looking at the top of the screen.

This picture takes three orthogonal planes of my brain, sets them up all 3d like, and then rotates the brain. You can barely see the dimension that goes "into" your computer screen, so it's basically just two dimensions of my brain twirling around 360 degrees. It starts with me looking to the right and slightly out of the monitor.

This one is like the last one, except that I rotated my head so that you can see all three dimenisons.

    Coolest thing evar.

In case of drunken officemates, do not leave yourself "always logged in" to livejournal.

Edit: You get some protection from actually-embarassing entries if you have a keyboard layout nobody else can type on. =)

    Help me with my research...
If anyone would care to fill out the survey at http://survey.ilovebacon.org/ it would indeed help me with my research, and I will love you for a while.

[Edit: If you can't find survey.ilovebacon.org, it's because your DNS server is slow on the uptake...try again tomorrow.]

    HPFPN Party! (4th of July)

Crosse-Posted Fromme Ye Livejournale of [info]drspooky
All spelling, grammatical, and social errors herein are his fault.

It's time again. Some of you may be asking "Time for what?", the philosophically minded may be asking "What's time?", and the rest of you are probably wanting me to shut up and get to the point.

In the years past, I've held a party on the fourth of July. This party has been a sarcastic poke at a holiday that I feel is antithetical to a lot of my views, and the views of some of those that I keep the company of. The rest just sort of showed up, following the lure of friends, the smell of grilling, and the warm loving scent of liquor.

This year, I am sad to say, will be my last year as co-host of this party. As Laura and I shove off for the far shores to establish the colony of Neo-Pittsburgh in the pacific northwest, we ask for a proper send off rolled the annual celebration that we’ve all come to know so well. So it is, with sadness and joy that I present:

    The next psych survey...
Hopefully, there will be fewer problems with this one...it's much simpler.

If you have any questions or comments about it or its methodology, email me privately--this time, I'm smart enough to turn comments off until we do our data analysis Tuesday night. =)

Thanks for your help, it should take maybe 5 minutes.

Results from the last survey study.
The paper I wrote on the last survey I posted here is a 6 page long PDF, double spaced (with margins which are too big), plus a 1-page table. You can download it here. Stay tuned for another survey for the second half of this class, to be posted Pretty Soon Now. The paper got 47/50 points because the explanation was a little difficult to follow.

    Regarding that survey...
So, regarding that survey from last week, there was one condition where your partner was cheating on you "emotionally" and one where s/he was cheating "sexually." So the question about, "How likely is it they had sex" was 1) a check to make sure you knew what your partner was doing, and 2) a measure of how much sexual cheating bothered you if you were in the "emotional" condition.

The class this was for was psychology of gender, so the main thing we were comparing was gender of the respondant, and what sort of cheating worries them the most. I'll post my write-up of the study this weekend. Thanks for helping. :)

    http://psych-survey.andrew.cmu.edu/ex8.6/

...if you could fill that out, it'd help me with my class...and I'm totally refusing to talk about what I'm testing or why until 3/27/04. Thanks!

[edit: I will not talking about it until 3/27, dammit, means you shouldn't either! Comments are off until then.]
[edit #2: It is OUT OF A BOOK. It is not a survey *I* designed. It is an ASSIGNMENT FOR CLASS. So pfeh.]
[edit #3: You can now talk about it. :)]

Report on the U of Oregon.
    It's a bloody long description. )

Epilogue: 3/5 planes today were egregiously late, 1 was of "undeterlmined status." The 30 minute turboprop, however, was ON TIME. I'm GOING TO BED now, 2 AM, Pittsburgh.

    OK, look.
Lee moved away. Mid-summer, Lee just up and moved to Annapolis, right? He's got his great codemonkey job, and he likes it. But he's NOT AROUND ANYMORE! And, like, he doesn't really post about me in his lj, anymore, either.

So, my lj is going to be one of two things:
    * Dormant: I don't post much, I just comment. Like, before.

    or

    * Active: As in, I might actually post about my life some.

I went to the Society for Personality and Social Psychology Annual Conference, in Austin, TX, this past weekend. I hung out with Megin, whom I haven't seen in ages, and shared a room with her and Steve, a grad student in CMU's psych department, who I had a class with a while back.

Megin and I made a list, of what to do while in Austin.

    1) Socialize and network with professors I've applied to work with.
    2) Attend interesting symposia and poster sessions.
    3) Mess with Texas.
    4) Punch David Buss (He's an evolutionary psychologist, and Megin hates evolutionary psychology).

    So. )

...and now I'm going to go to sleep, much more relaxed about my future, and with a fairly good sense of career and place-in-the-world.
